1897: The steamer Excelsior docks in San Francisco carrying a ton of gold starting the Klondike gold rush.
1898: Vigilante J.M. Tanner is officially appointed a deputy U.S. marshal by Marshal Shoup. The Safety Committee (vigilantes) holds secret trials of the captured gang members.
