Today's post regards the 1900 census and Soapy's father, Jefferson Randolph Smith Sr. If you read my book you will know that he spent his remainder years after 1894, confined in the Texas State Lunatic Asylum (yes, that's the real name) for his problems with alcoholism. In the nineteenth century it was common for alcoholics to be admitted into an insane asylum for a cure. There is still a question as to whether he died there, or if he had been released before his death.
The information gathered from this census for Jefferson R. Smith Sr., is as follows.
Home in 1900: Austin Ward 6 State Lunatic Asylum, Travis, Texas
Age: 68
Birth: 1832.
Birthplace: Georgia
Race: white
Gender: male
Marital Status: Married (though wife died in 1877)
pp. 21-22, 26, 28, 32, 57, 377, 594.
