It's on page 547 of my book, Alias Soapy Smith: The Life and Death of a Scoundrel. There is a lot more information on the gunfight and Jesse Murphy in there as well, but perhaps this is the best quote (besides what Murphy himself said) because it comes from J. M. Tanner who was one of the four guards on the wharf the night Soapy was killed and he was literally standing next to Murphy.
Even better: Murphy killed Soapy with Soapy's own rifle which means Soapy was a wounded and unarmed man at the time. Can you say...MURDER?
