From the Galveston Daily News, September 21, 1883.
An attempt was made yesterday evening to burn the Avenue hotel building by setting a small store-room in the rear. It was discovered in time to prevent any damage. Bascom [sic] Smith, a youth, aged about fourteen years, who had made an unsuccessful application for work at the hotel, was suspected as the guilty party, and has been committed to jail in default of a $1500 bond.
