Holy Smokes! Tell us more--has this been documented?
It's on page 547 of my book, Alias Soapy Smith: The Life and Death of a Scoundrel. There is a lot more information on the gunfight and Jesse Murphy in there as well, but perhaps this is the best quote (besides what Murphy himself said) because it comes from J. M. Tanner who was one of the four guards on the wharf the night Soapy was killed and he was literally standing next to Murphy. Even better: Murphy killed Soapy with Soapy's own rifle which means Soapy was a wounded and unarmed man at the time. Can you say...MURDER?
Thank you for leaving your comment and/or question on my blog. I always read, and will answer all questions left here. Please know that they are greatly appreciated. -Jeff Smith
